Charles '51 & Ruth Otto

Charles '51 & Ruth Otto

“We encourage other alumni to think about an annuity. Consider how Auburn has provided for your life and livelihood. May it be an ‘attitude or gratitude.’ ”

Chuck Otto '51 credits Auburn University for his long veterinary career. Following World War II, the GI Bill provided funds he needed to attend college, and he quickly became part of the Auburn Family. His wife, Ruth, worked in the Zoology and Fisheries Department, and later, the couple's five children all graduated from Auburn. Chuck and Ruth found a creative way to give back to Auburn University while ensuring that they would not outlive their assets or income through a Charitable Gift Annuity.

The gift annuity provided a sizable charitable deduction, coupled with guaranteed lifetime quarterly payments, at a rate that was much better than his fixed income assets were providing. Chuck and Ruth were so pleased with their first gift annuity that they have established several additional gift annuities. At the conclusion of their receipt of lifetime payments, the gift annuity will fund the Dr. & Mrs. Charles S. Otto Endowed Funds for Excellence in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The college will receive future funds for scholarships, and the Ottos draw a quarterly income (a portion of which is tax free) and receive a significant charitable deduction.
