Jin Dih '68 and Wanyan Shih
Jin-Dih Shih '68 came to Auburn from Taiwan to earn a master's degree in mathematics. Becoming a part of the Auburn Family was life-changing for him. He discovered Auburn instructors genuinely cared about their students, and wanted to help them succeed.
“Making a quality education affordable for someone else is simply returning the favor. ”
When he was a student, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics shaped his thought processes and the way he approached problem solving. The instruction he received affected every aspect of his life and showed him how to think logically. Professionally, as an actuary for an insurance company, his job was to collect information, decipher it, and then come to an analytical conclusion. He credits Auburn University for showing him this way of thinking, and wanted to provide the same opportunity for the next generation of students.
"Making a quality education affordable for someone else is simply returning the favor. Auburn gave me the opportunity to have a successful career, and that is why I choose to give, he said.
