David and Barbara Fussell

David and Barbara Fussell

For decades, Samford Park has been home to historic events at Auburn University, from large public celebrations to the quieter moments that mark milestones in a person's life. In 1974, it was where David Fussell proposed to Barbara Hutson, beginning a journey that would lead to two children, five grandchildren, and a belief in leaving a legacy.

According to the Fussells, they chose Auburn for the same reasons - its family feel, beautiful campus, and the educational programs that provided the opportunities they needed in life. They graduate in 1974, David with a bachelor's degree in economics, and Barbara with a bachelor's degree in speech pathology education. Each found success in their respective career paths, as David established a flourishing financial services practice and Barbara served in various leadership roles as a speech pathologist with the Floyd County School System in Georgia for 30 years.

Because of Auburn's role in their lives, the couples established two endowments to support students through a simple bequest in their wills.

"As Auburn alumni, we recognized choosing Auburn was one of the best decisions we've ever made, "Barbara said. "Making our gift was an easy process, and we are happy to experience the joy of giving back by leaving part of our legacy to our respective colleges."

The Barbara Hutson Fussell Endowed Graduate Award in Special Education and Rehabilitation in the College of Education and the David Gene Fussell Endowed Scholarship in the Harbert College of Business will create opportunities for future students at Auburn.

"We expect our gift to assist students in achieving their life goals and dreams, enabling them to continue the Auburn legacy of making a difference in the lives of others," Barbara said.
